Completion of Historic Baltimore area Stair Runner Project

Main Street Oriental Rugs has just completed a four-day project that required an Oriental stair runner to be installed around two flights of bending stairs.  This project, which was located on historic Baltimore property,  required many hours of diligent work, yet ended in a success that created a beautiful work of Oriental art.  In total, the project required 275 linear feet of Oriental stair runners, making it one of the largest projects Main Street Oriental Rugs has done to this day.  If you would like more information on Main Street Oriental Rug's installation, sale, cleaning, or repair services, please visit us at 8290 Main Street, Ellicott City, or visit us online at www.msorientalrugs.com

Rug Hanging

Occasionally, customers come to Main Street Rugs looking for a way to hang their rugs on the wall.  To reassure you, our process does not harm the rug in any way and will not appear on the front end of the rug.  To hang a rug, We sow a sleeve on to the back of the rug, thus creating an area where a pole can be attached to the rug.  Using this technique, Main Street Oriental Rugs has been able to successfully hang many rugs for its loving customers.  Please come by our store at 8290 Main Street, Ellicott City or visit us online at www.msorientalrugs.com.

Here at Main Street Oriental Rugs in Ellicott City, we have the pleasure of having a reproduction Serapi Heriz rug.  Serapi rugs originated in the town of Sarab in the Heriz area of Iran during the late 1800's.  These rugs soon gained enormous popularity and have become on of the most sought-after carpets on the East Coast.  It especially well known for its double-outlining style, which utilizes a double border to add more emphasis on the centerpiece.  Serapi rugs are known to have vivid colors ranging from deep blues to bright oranges and often have medallion designs with angular geometric patterns.  Occasionally, these rugs are found with all-over designs, yet those are much less common than medallion design.  The rug that we currently have is a medallion design and is currently priced at .  We highly recommend that you come by and see this beautiful rug to see exactly why it has become so popular.

The tradition of Afghan war rugs began at the beginning of Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in 1979.  These unique rugs, which are characterized by the depiction of AK 47’s and other weaponry, make up one of the largest war art industries in the world.   Main Street Oriental Rugs has recently unveiled such a rug and asks that you come see it.  This distinctive rug has a red patterned border with a white background.  In the foreground there are tanks and other weaponry, with a central map of Afghanistan.  At the top of the rug, the letters U-S-S-R can be seen, which dates this rug back to the Soviet War in Afghanistan.  It is unfortunate that the rug industry began to use war in its art, and we would like to see it shift to a more pacifistic illustration of the world’s culture.  We would like to see the rug industry depicting the unity of mankind and diversity of cultures.

Highlight of Main Street Oriental Rugs' Collection

Main Street Oriental Rugs currently has in stock many new selections.  Among these rugs are Karaja, Gabbeh and Persian Qum.  Karaja is a village northwest of Iran. Karaja rugs often have geometric designs and feature repeating medallions, which gives them a unique distinction from other rugs made in northwestern Iran.  This particular rug is an antique, approximately 70 years old.

A similar rug to the Karaja rug that Main Street Oriental Rugs also has in stock is a Sarab.  Sarab rugs are a type of Karaja rug that has a finer weave.  This Sarab is 2ft 5in by 13ft 6in.
This Gabbeh runner is one of the many runners in stock at Main Street Oriental Rugs.  Gabbeh rugs are traditionally triple-knotted rugs that are woven by the women of the Qashqai tribes of Iran.  They are usually thicker than other Persian rugs and tend to have simple rectangular designs.  They contain the natural colors of the wool or are dyed with natural dyes.  Gabbeh rugs have low knot counts compared to other Persian rugs.

Two more rugs that Main Street Oriental Rugs recently acquired are called Persian Qum.  Qum carpets are among the finest in the world. Although it does not boast a long and ancient history, Qum, south of Tehran, creates exceptional works of art, frequently in pure silk. Qum has no pattern unique to their city, so its carpets are produced in a variety of beautiful and historic designs, demanding prices in the highest range of all Persian weaving.  Although signatures are found on fine rugs made elsewhere, the weavers of Qum take enormous pride in their products.

Tabriz Oriental Rugs

Tabriz is the capital and the historical key city in Iranian Azerbaijan.  It has been an important weaving center from at least the fifteenth century onward.  It was the capital of the Safavi Dynasty for a period of time and fell to the Ottomans in 1534.  Today, the city of Tabriz continues to be an important place both economically and socially.

Tabriz carpets come in a wide variety of designs and are copied throughout the Orient because of their high quality weaves and designs.  One design a Tabriz rug can have is a Herati (fish pattern) motif.  The design consists of repeated flower heads bracketed by two serrate-edged leaves (a representation of one male, and two female fish).  Other designs possess intricate patterns that are usually arranged to give the delicate appearance of lacework.

Repair and Cleaning of Antique Persian Kashan

An Antique Persian Kashan recently came to Main Street Oriental Rugs for cleaning and repair.  The owner's family had brought this rug to the United States in the 1920's.  A large rug, 12ft 5in by 8ft 9in, it has seven borders and an allover pattern with large motifs.  This rug has over 20 jewel tone colors using both organic and man-made dyes.  It is approximately 90 years old, and it is a very rare piece.  This rug came to us with extensive pet stains, a large hole, and a border that looked as if it had been chewed.  Main Street Oriental Rugs has just finished the work on it, which included multiple washes, binding the border, and repairing the hole.  To finish the work it took three months.

Tibetan Rugs

One style of Oriental rugs that Main Street Oriental Rugs carry is Tibetan rugs.  Older Tibetan rugs tended to be on the more simple side, due to a limit of colors and time available to the Tibetan rug weavers.  They mostly used muted colors such as red, yellow, indigo, gray and brown.  However, at the turn of the 20th century, the weavers were able to get more colors and could make much more complex designs.  Chinese influences began making an impact on the weavers as well.  This is a very fine type of rug.  Here are some of the samples that can be found at Main Street Oriental Rugs:
