Symbolism in Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs have been made for hundreds of years and since the very beginning there has been symbolism in them. This symbolism can derive from religion, nature, or culture. The Pazyryk Rug, the oldest rug ever to be discovered, contains many symbolic images. For example, the small border that contains grazing elk is thought to symbolize longevity.
Other animals are used in oriental rugs to symbolize certain attributes. The lion represents power, the leopard represents bravery, the dove represents peace, etc. One of the most iconic symbols in oriental rugs is the "Tree of Life". The design is the oldest symbol, predating Christianity and Islam, and represents understanding and truth.
Although symbols can still be found in oriental rugs, they have been increasingly losing their historical significance as people have forgotten the meaning behind the symbolic patterns. When you are purchasing an oriental rug,you are not just buying a piece of art but also a piece of history.
At Main Street Oriental Rugs, we would like to educate our customers to know what they are purchasing and what is the history behind purchasing the rugs from Main Street Oriental Rugs in Ellicott City.

Oriental Rug Cleaning

Many people don't think about what happens to their rug after they buy it; however, like any other household piece, Oriental rugs need attention too.  In order to extend the life of a high quality rug and to preserve its color, it is recommended that a professional (such as us) clean your Oriental rug once every 3-5 years, or more often if it is in a high traffic area.  Cleaning an Oriental rug doesn't take very long, yet the benefits of the wash help prevent premature wear and even prevent allergens such as pollen and dust mites from invading your home.  It is easy to forget about maintaining your fine rug, especially since Oriental rugs vacuum easily and don't pill, yet only a professional wash can give it a truly thorough cleansing.  If you have a fine Oriental rug that needs some attention, including pet stains and repairs, don't hesitate to call us at 410-313-9090 or visit us in store at 8290 Main Street, Ellicott City, MD, 21043.
