The tradition
of Afghan war rugs began at the beginning of Soviet occupation of Afghanistan
in 1979. These unique rugs, which are
characterized by the depiction of AK 47’s and other weaponry, make up one of
the largest war art industries in the world.
Main Street Oriental Rugs has recently
unveiled such a rug and asks that you come see it. This distinctive rug has a red patterned
border with a white background. In the
foreground there are tanks and other weaponry, with a central map of
Afghanistan. At the top of the rug, the
letters U-S-S-R can be seen, which dates this rug back to the Soviet War in
Afghanistan. It is unfortunate that the rug
industry began to use war in its art, and we would like to see it shift to a
more pacifistic illustration of the world’s culture. We would like to see the rug industry depicting the unity of mankind and diversity of cultures.
